John C. Walters is co-chief operating officer of The Hartford's life operations and president of the company's U.S. Wealth Management division which includes the nation's fourth largest life insurance group.
In this position Walters is responsible for retail investment products institutional investment products retirement plans individual life insurance and Woodbury Financial Services Hartford Life's affiliated broker-dealer. The company's PLANCO subsidiary a leading wholesaler of investment products also reports to Walters. U.S. Wealth Management offers a wide range of products including annuities mutual funds 401(k) 403(b) and 457 retirement plans and individual life insurance policies.
At the end of 2006 U.S. Wealth Management had $252 billion in assets under management. Earnings for 2006 exceeded $1 billion and sales were $37 billion.
U.S. Wealth Management is a market leader and ranks No. 1 in variable annuity assets No. 2 in variable life insurance sales and is the fastest growing non-proprietary retail mutual fund family in history.
Walters joined Hartford Life in April 2000 from First Union Securities the brokerage subsidiary of First Union Corp. In that position he managed their consulting services group which provided investment consulting to high net worth clients. Walters joined First Union through its 1998 acquisition of Wheat First Butcher Singer where he had been since 1984.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business and finance from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a Masters of Business Administration degree from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
