John, a resident of Narragansett, R.I., is chairman and chief executive officer of Washington Trust and Washington Trust Bancorp, Inc. He oversees the $2.4 billion financial services institution, guiding the corporation into its third century of business.
John joined Washington Trust in January 1996 as president and chief operating officer, was promoted to chief executive officer in April 1997, and appointed chairman in April 1999. Under his leadership, the Corporation has made four acquisitions: Pier Bank in 1999, Phoenix Investment Management in 2000, First Financial, parent company of First Bank and Trust, in 2002, and Weston Financial Group, Inc. in 2005.
John graduated from Yale University in 1967 and from the Harvard Business School Program for Management Development in 1987. From 1967 through 1971 he served in the United States Army as a linguist.
Early in his banking career, John spent 15 years with Shawmut National Corporation in the Capital Markets department, where he held various positions, including senior vice president - capital markets. He left Shawmut National in 1988 to become president of Sterling Bancshares. Under his leadership, Sterling tripled in size and gained a reputation for excellence with customers, shareholders and the community.
John serves on the boards of numerous civic, professional and charitable organizations. He serves on the board of directors of the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council, the board of governors of the Rhode Island Commodores, the executive board of the Narragansett Council - Boy Scouts of America, the board of trustees of the Providence Chamber of Commerce, the board of advisors for Rhode Island for Community & Justice (formerly The National Conference for Community and Justice), and The United Way of Rhode Island, where he is the 2004-2005 campaign chairman. John also serves on the board of trustees of The Westerly Hospital, where he is treasurer, and as incorporator for South County Hospital Foundation. In addition, he serves on the board of trustees of New England College of Finance, is a member of the Brown University Civic Leadership Council, and is director emeritus of the Massachusetts Housing Investment Corporation. He is the recipient of the 2004 Humanitarian Award from Rhode Island for Community & Justice, the 2004 Encore Award for Support of the Arts from the Arts & Business Council of Rhode Island and the 2005 Community Service Award from Leadership Rhode Island. |
