John Feerick Biography :

Professor John D. Feerick served as the Dean of Fordham University School of Law from July 1982 until 2002 when he resumed a full professorship of law. He practiced law from 1961-1982 at the firm of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom as a partner from 1968 to 1982 developing its labor and employment law practice.

During his tenure at Fordham Law School Professor Feerick has served in a number of public positions including membership on the New York State Law Revision Commission Chairman of the New York State Commission on Government Integrity and President of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He has been a mediator and arbitrator of many disputes including labor disputes at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center the 1994 transit negotiations in New York City the National Football League salary cap and in the National Basketball Association. He previously chaired the Ethics Committee of the Dispute Resolution Section of the American Bar Association and a joint committee of the American Bar Association American Arbitration Association and the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution that developed a set of ethical standards for mediators of disputes. In January 2003 he was appointed as a Special Master of Family Homelessness in New York City. In April 2003 he was appointed Chair of the newly formed New York State Commission to Promote Public Confidence in Judicial Elections. In August 2004 he was appointed to a panel of judicial referees to hear and report on the school funding controversy in New York State. Professor Feerick has been a member of the New York State Judicial Salary Commission the Committee to Promote Public Trust and Confidence in the Legal System the New York State Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Committee and the Chief Judge's Corporate Advisory Group. He has chaired a number of other New York State Committees on legal matters.

Professor Feerick is the former Chair and a current honorary member of the Board of Directors of the American Arbitration Association. In addition to being a Director of Wyeth Professor Feerick is a Director of Group Health Insurance and the Sentinel Mutual Funds and a Trustee of New York Medical College and the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley.

During his career Professor Feerick has served as a member of a task force that helped develop the Twenty-Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution. He is the author of scores of articles and several books one of which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Professor Feerick is the recipient of numerous awards including the Law and Society Award from the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest the 1999 Citizen Achievement Award from the New York State League of Women Voters the American Irish Historical Society Gold Medal and the New York State Bar Association Gold Medal. He has received honorary degrees from the College of New Rochelle St. Francis College Hamilton College and Fordham University.

Professor Feerick is a graduate of Fordham College in 1958 and Fordham Law School in 1961 where he served as Editor-in-Chief of its Law Review.
