A native of Los Angeles, California, Dr. Maupin received his undergraduate training at San Jose State College. He continued his education at Meharry Medical College's School of Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee, where he received his DDS in 1972. In 1979, he earned an MBA from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Maupin was in private practice only a short time before entering the U.S. Army Dental Corps in 1974. In 1976, he was named dental director of West Baltimore Community Health Corporation where he developed its first dental clinic. At this time, Dr. Maupin began channeling his career toward the administrative and management side of healthcare.
A past president of the National Dentist Association, Dr. Maupin continues his membership in that organization as well as in the National Medical Association, National Association of Community Health Centers, and the National Association of Health Care Executives. He has served on several advisory groups, including the Governor�s Advisory Council on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Maryland), the Board of Scientific Counselors, the National Center for Infectious Diseases, and the Managed Care Task Force.
Dr. Maupin�s many honors and awards include having received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Virginia Union University in 1996 and an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Morehouse School of Medicine in 1995. He received the A.B. Cooper Award for distinguished service to the profession from the North Georgia Dental Society and the Mayor�s Citation for outstanding public service in 1987 (Baltimore). |
