John Powers is a partner in the Products Liability and Mass Tort Practice Group. John is a trial and appellate attorney. His products liability practice is focused on defense of U.S. and foreign medical device, pharmaceutical, and automotive manufacturers in nationwide and multidistrict litigation. His commercial litigation practice involves defense of complex litigation including class action, unfair competition, false advertising, California Business and Professions Code �17200 and �17500 claims, antitrust, False Claims Act (Qui Tam actions), misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of fiduciary duty, environmental and insurance coverage disputes.
Education. John graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1986, where he received a bachelor's degree in government and international studies, and was selected to study abroad in Notre Dame's London Program. He received his J.D. cum laude from Boston College Law School in 1989, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. While in law school, he was a member of the Boston College Law Review and served as a writer and editor.
Professional Memberships and Activities. John is a member of the Defense Research Institute and is active in the Product Liability Section. He has published and lectured on products liability, insurance and environmental topics. He has been trained as a trial attorney at the International Association of Defense Counsel Trial Academy. He is active in the Association of Business Trial Lawyers.
John is a member of the bars of California and Massachusetts, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Central and Eastern Districts of California and the District of Massachusetts, and the United States Courts of Appeal for the Ninth and First Circuits. |
