John Hardiman, a partner since 1990, has broad experience in complex litigation, including matters related to contests for corporate control. In 2005, he moved to the London office, where he co-heads the European Litigation and Arbitration Group. Mr. Hardiman has worked on a wide range of high stakes deals, including the merger between First Union Corporation and Wachovia successfully warding off SunTrust Corporation's challenge to the merger and Aventis' merger with Sanofi. He also has considerable experience handling regulatory investigations for the Firm's broker-dealer and corporate clients, as well as representing boards of mutual funds. Since moving to London, Mr. Hardiman was part of the Sullivan & Cromwell team advising United Kingdom cable television company Telewest on its merger with NTL Corp.; and Spain's largest power company, Endesa, in connection with the unsolicited offer for it made by Gas Natural. Selected Transactions and Cases TeliaSonera Lead arbitration counsel before the ICC in successful breach of contract action brought by this Swedish telecommunications company against Turkish conglomerate Cukurova, relating to TeliaSonera's efforts to purchase Turkish cellular phone company, Turkcell. Dime Savings Bank worked on its successful defense against the unsolicited takeover efforts of North Fork Bank. Goldman Sachs - part of the team advising in connection with regulatory inquiries and class action litigation related to underwriting practices during the "dot com" bubble of the late 1990s. AllianceBernstein Capital advised the independent directors of a variety of funds managed by AllianceBernstein in connection with litigation driven by the "late trading" and "market timing" investigations conducted by the New York Attorney General's office beginning in 2003.
