John N. Seibel is a partner in the firm's Chicago office and has focused his practice on the defense of professional negligence cases. Mr. Seibel is involved in all aspects of the defense of medical malpractice cases, from discovery through trial through appeal. Mr. Seibel has extensive trial experience and he has tried to verdict numerous cases in state and federal court in complex litigation involving numerous hospitals and various medical specialties including anesthesiology, psychiatry, obstetrical gynecology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, nephrology, surgery, infectious disease, pediatrics, family practice, gastroenterology, orthopedics, and ophthalmology. Mr. Seibel has represented many other medical specialties in cases that have been resolved prior to trial. He has extensive experience in representing various different health care practitioners, such as doctors, surgeons, nurses, and dentists. He has represented both the individual health care provider and numerous health care institutions. Mr. Seibel has dealt with virtually all issues involved in defending health care practitioners, from care and treatment to informed consent. Mr. Seibel was involved in a unique case in which a common law wife could not recover loss of society, and has been involved in the unique issue of whether a patient who pled guilty to a criminal charge can recover for alleged malpractice that allegedly caused the criminal acts. Mr. Seibel has also been retained as counsel on high profile, highly publicized cases such as one that involved whether a woman may be compelled to undergo a cesarean section in the face of high risk of death to the fetus if normal delivery occurred. Mr. Seibel has been a frequent lecturer on various medical/legal issues and has spoken on medical malpractice issues before physicians and risk managers. In addition, Mr. Seibel has spoken on trial preparation at the request of the Chicago Bar Association. Mr. Seibel has been a frequent lecturer for the Palmer Associates, Inc. Medical Practice Management Workshop and for the Illinois State Medical Society on legal issues for advanced intervention training for physicians, and on civil litigation for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education.
