John V. Ohnstad, Jr. is an associate in the firm. He handles litigation, and also other practice areas including torts, insurance, contracts and construction litigation.
John first practiced as an attorney in Seattle, Washington after earning his Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Washington in 1987. He practiced primarily in torts, insurance defense and construction law until relocating to the Midwest in 1992. He was the Deputy States Attorney for Grant County, South Dakota, handling primarily criminal and juvenile matters. John concurrently practiced in a firm, which became Boos & Ohnstad, LLC, where he was a managing member. The general civil practice in Milbank involved a wide variety of clients and cases, but had an emphasis on insurance defense.
In January 1998, John joined Kahn, Soares & Conway, LLP where he first began his legal career as an intern in the summer of 1985 while attending law school. John is a member of the California State Bar, the South Dakota State Bar, the Washington State Bar and is licensed to practice before the U.S. District Court for the districts of California and Washington and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
John is also an Army aviator and a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. After graduating from South Dakota State University in 1976, he spent eight years on active duty before leaving the active Army to attend law school. During his military career, John has spent the majority of his time in command of attack helicopter units or in key operational and logistics staff positions for those units.Education
