John W. Nichols, 91, is a co-founder of Devon. He was named chairman emeritus in 1999. Nichols was chairman of the board of directors from the time Devon began operations in 1971 until 1999. He is a founding partner of Blackwood & Nichols Co., which put together the first public oil and gas drilling fund ever registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Nichols is a non-practicing Certified Public Accountant.
