John Boland joined PBS in fall of 2006 as the organization's first Chief Content Officer. In this role, Mr. Boland is responsible for television programming, new media, education and promotion. He oversees the delivery of PBS' distinctive content to multiple platforms, including television, Internet, and video on-demand.
Prior to PBS, Mr. Boland served as Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer at KQED Public Broadcasting, the San Francisco-based organization that operates the PBS and NPR stations in Northern California. There, he led a multimedia organization of more than 150 television and radio personnel. Under his leadership, KQED's content organization was successful in using new technologies and cross-platform initiatives to deliver quality programming. In addition to being a digital media advocate, he also managed to increase the level of traditional content created, most notably the launch of seven new local and regional television series, as well as such national programs as the Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures series, Frontline World documentaries and Sweeny Todd in Concert.
Mr. Boland began his career as a daily newspaper reporter and editor in his native New Jersey. Following that he held a number of senior management positions in media and communications before joining KQED in 1995. |
