John Gerhard was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1951 and grew up in New Jersey. He received a B.A. from Columbia College in 1973 and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1976. He joined Cravath in 1984 and became a Senior Attorney in 1988. Prior to joining Cravath, John participated in The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's Public Administration Program and served as an Assistant Corporation Counsel in the New York City Law Department and an Assistant Commissioner and General Counsel to the New York City Department of Ports and Terminals. John's practice focuses on traditional real estate law, including acquisitions, financings and dispositions of interests in shopping centers, office buildings, hotels, industrial properties and land development projects.
