John Harbison Biography :

Mr. John Harbison represents Tech Coast Angels on Clupedias Board of Directors. He is currently the CEO of TechSpin LLC, which finds emerging high-tech companies that have technology potentially relevant to aerospace/defense applications, but government markets are not their primary focus. TechSpin leverages its relationships with all of the leading aerospace defense companies who seek to spin-in technology by being channel partners. TechSpin also assists Aerospace/Defense firms to spin-out their technology through licensing and creation of new commercial startups. John is also currently active as a member of Tech Coast Angels, the leading angel investment group in the U.S. Before co-founding Tech-Spin, Mr. Harbison served as CEO of SilentRunner - a network/security software start-up. SilentRunner won many awards including PC Magazine's Editor's Choice award for Event Monitoring and 2002 Best of Year in Networking Software, as well as Computerworld Honors 21st Century Award. The company reached $20 million in cumulative revenues before it was sold. As president of Raytheon Commercial Ventures, Mr. Harbison led Raytheons efforts to identify ideas for commercializing defense technology, screen and prioritize these opportunities, develop business plans, forge alliances with external financial partners and market/strategic partners and incubate companies leading to a liquidity event. Under his leadership, Raytheon spun out five companies where it contributed IP and people, accessing over $110 million in outside capital and retaining over $50 million in equity interests for Raytheon post-money in these companies; two companies realized full liquidity events. Prior to Raytheon Mr. Harbison spent 20 years at Booz Allen Hamilton, where he served as vice president. He led the firms Aerospace/Defense Practice, its Strategic Alliances functional practice, its Los Angeles office and at one point served as the youngest member of the board of directors and as chairman of the finance committee. In 1998, Mr. Harbison co-authored the book Smart Alliances: A Practical Guide to Repeatable Success, which since publication has been (and remains) the bestselling book on the subject. He has also authored 8 Aerospace/Defense viewpoints, which have been widely read and quoted in Aviation Week, and Defense News. Mr. Harbison was nominated by Aviation Week for the Aerospace Laurel Award. Mr. Harbison has authored many articles, been quoted in over 40 publications, and has appeared on ABC, CNN, CNBC, CBS, PBS and Bloomberg. He has been a keynote speaker at such forums as AIA, EIA and the Conference Board.
