John counsels and represents companies and organizations on a diverse range of intellectual property matters, including patent procurement and licensing, patent portfolio assessment incidental to investments and acquisitions, domestic and international patent policy, and patent enforcement. His technical expertise extends to software and electrical engineering disciplines. John also counsels and represents companies in trademark, copyright, and trade secrets matters, including litigation. He represents clients in trade-related disputes, including proceedings before the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. Court of International Trade.
Before entering private practice, John was a consulting nuclear engineer. He conducted nuclear licensing reviews, human health and environmental impact studies, and designed systems for detecting buried, unexploded ordinances. He served as the project manager for Dose Reconstruction at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) under contract to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
John also served in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear submarine officer. He was commanding officer of a nuclear submarine, and later Deputy Director for Exploitation at the Naval Technical Intelligence Center.

SecureInfo Corporation v. Telos Corporation et al. (E.D. Va.). Represented the trade secret holder in a software case involving trade secret misappropriation and copyright and patent infringement. (2005)
The SCO Group, Inc. v. International Business Machines Corp. (D. Utah). Defended SCO against software patent infringement claims. IBM withdrew all four patent claims. (2004)
Ethos v. RealNetworks (U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts). Represented Ethos in a patent infringement suit. (2001-2002)
Metrokane v. Lifetime Hoan Corporation (U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York). Represented Metrokane in a patent, trademark and trade dress infringement action. (2001-2002)
Digital Equipment Corporation v. United States (U.S. Court of International Trade). Represented DEC in recovery of import duties. (2000)
JFJ Partnership v. American Fire & Casualty Co. (United States District Court, District of Maryland, Southern Division). Represented JFJ in a breach of contract case. (1998-1999)
