Professor Thompson became the Executive Director of the Sydney Melanoma Unit, the largest melanoma unit in the world, with over 1,200 new melanoma patients referred for treatment annually and involvement in a wide range of research projects and clinical trials. In 1999, Professor Thompson was appointed as Professor of Melanoma and Surgical Oncology at the University of Sydney. He is involved in teaching and curriculum development for medical undergraduates, hospital residents and surgical trainees and is a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is Vice-President of the International Society for Regional Cancer Therapy and Associate Editor of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the Society of Surgical Oncology. Professor Thompson is the author of over 200 peer reviewed scientific articles in the medical literature, as well as numerous book chapters, review articles and a recently published monograph on lymphatic mapping. He is an internationally recognized authority on lymphatic mapping and the sentinel lymph node biopsy procedure. His principal research interests include regional chemotherapy techniques for limb tumors that cannot be treated surgically. |
