John specializes in helping universities and academic medical centers realize the business value from their investments in technology. He has over 16 years of experience working with and managing information systems organizations including five years at Harvard University. He is a frequent speaker at industry events.
Professional Experience
Prior to joining Huron John was a regional practice leader for higher education consulting at BearingPoint. Previously he worked for Ernst & Young where he was a founding member of and chief technology officer for their higher education practice and chief technology officer for part of their healthcare practice. He also worked as an IT manager at Harvard University.
John is also an ECAR (EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research) Research Fellow Emeritus. While working with ECAR he co-authored studies on a variety of topics relevant to higher education technology including ERP information security alignment of technology and business strategy networking and business process performance.
John works with institutions around the country to assist them with complex business and technology initiatives. He recently led an initiative with a major research university to plan an enterprise transformation project focused on achieving significant operational improvements in their administrative operations. The project helped them assess their current performance define strategic and specific future requirements assess options for software to enable these requirements define the technical and data architectures to support the business requirements develop a change management plan for the initiative and address the readiness of the organization to embark on this change.
John works with institutions to help them make better use of their data. He has led several recent projects at major research universities focused on developing enterprise-wide strategies for business intelligence and has worked with organizations on developing appropriate governance structures for effective management of data. He also helps institutions keep their data secure having led several major institutions through enterprise information security assessments.
He also assists clients with the selection and implementation of packaged software such as ERP systems offered by PeopleSoft Lawson and SAP. His work in this area includes requirements definition vendor evaluation and contract negotiation planning and executing implementation and testing cycles and systems integration. He is familiar with the major modules used in higher education including financials human resources and student information as well as the associated data warehousing middleware and other tools needed to make implementation possible. He is also familiar with major systems utilized in healthcare provider organizations both on the administrative and clinical sides of the organization.
John helps clients with IT strategic planning and with implementing effective management and governance practices for their IT functions. He has worked with a number of organizations on projects ranging from development of effective governance for administrative information systems to optimizing project portfolio management of IT initiatives to formulation of a strategic direction for a new enterprise IT organization to development of an institutional strategy for eCommerce at a major healthcare provider.
John has helped clients evaluate business processes to identify and implement operational improvements. He worked with a major public university system to assess their admissions process identify bottlenecks and recommend improvements. He worked with a rapidly growing online university to evaluate their business processes identify those areas that were restricting growth and recommend process and technical improvements that would allow the institution to continue its growth trajectory.
