Jonathan Rivin is the firm's real estate partner. In private legal practice and in the legal departments of a major life insurance company and a money center bank, Jonathan has advised institutional and individual clients on all elements of real property matters since 1980. Jonathan therefore has a unique perspective which facilitates deals. He has sat in all chairs at the negotiating table, knows the thought processes of each party, and can adapt his style to his client's goals. Jonathan's experience over the years has included:
Acquisition, sale and tax-free exchanges of properties, including high-rise office buildings, mixed-use business parks, warehouses, shopping centers, apartment buildings and single family houses
Leasing for landlords and tenants of office, industrial, retail and special purpose space; equity leases, sale/leaseback and ground lease transactions
Conventional and participating, construction and permanent mortgage loans
Construction and development projects, including land use matters and agreements with design professionals and contractors, public agencies and development partners
Workouts and restructures of leases and loans, deeds-in-lieu of foreclosure, REO management and sales
Brokerage and management relationships and agreements
Pro Bono representation of various non-profit organizations
In addition to client work, Jonathan is currently Chair of the San Francisco Real Estate Roundtable and has served as Chair of the California State Bar Real Property Section. He is active in the American College of Real Estate Attorneys and the American College of Mortgage Attorneys, as well as community organizations including the Julia Morgan School for Girls and the Camphill Foundation. He is a frequent speaker and writer for legal and real estate industry groups on current issues in the field.
Jonathan graduated from Harvard College in 1977 (magna cum laude in Economics) and from the University of Michigan Law School in 1980 (cum laude).
