Joseph W. Brown is Safeco's non-executive chairman of the board, effective January 1, 2006. He has been a member of the Safeco board since 2001.
Brown is chairman of MBIA Inc., a New York-based financial services company. Until May 2004, he also was chief executive officer of MBIA Inc., and of its main operating unit, MBIA Insurance Corporation.
Brown brings to his role as Safeco chairman broad experience in the property and casualty insurance industry. He previously was president and chief executive officer of Talegen Holdings, Inc., an insurance holding company and a Xerox Corporation subsidiary headquartered in Seattle. Before joining Talegen, Brown was president and chief executive officer of Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, a California-based subsidiary of Allianz AG of Munich, Germany. Brown joined Fireman's Fund in 1974. A 1974 graduate of Northern Illinois University, Brown is a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. He also is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters Society.
