Mr. Joseph Herring was elected Covance's Chairman of the Board effective January 1 2006 in addition to his role of Chief Executive Officer. He assumed the position of CEO in January 2005.
Mr. Herring joined Covance in 1996 as Corporate Vice President and General Manager of North America Early Development. He was promoted to the position of Global President of Early Development Services in September 1999 responsible for worldwide Preclinical testing and Phase I services. He was instrumental in driving the turnaround of that business into one of Covance's top financial performers. In November 2001 he assumed the position of President and Chief Operating Officer of Covance where he was responsible for all of Covance's business units worldwide including Early Development Clinical Development Central Labs and Commercialization Services. He was elected to Covance's Board of Directors in June 2004.
Prior to Covance Mr. Herring spent 18 years at American Hospital Supply Corporation Baxter International and Caremark International where he held senior leadership positions culminating in the position of Vice President and General Manager of Caremark's oncology business.
Mr. Herring serves on the Board of Directors of First Circle Medical (Minneapolis MN) � an early stage drug development company working on proprietary technology for treating Hepatitis C. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Clinical Research Organizations (ACRO) � a professional organization of companies that include clinical research as a major part of their business providing specialized services that are integral to the development of drugs biologics and medical devices.
Mr. Herring received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Louisiana State University in 1978.
