Julie Menin Biography :

Julie Menin is Chairperson of Community Board 1 and has been since her election in 2005. Previously, she co-chaired the Community Board's World Trade Center Redevelopment Committee. Under Ms. Menin's leadership, CB1 secured a greater commitment by Silverstein Properties to use ultra low sulfur diesel fuel in the construction at the World Trade Center site, significantly reducing airborne pollutants. She successfully advocated for the funding for several public projects including the Burling Slip playground, Pearl Street playground renovation, Manhattan Youth community center and New York Public Library branch downtown and is working on several important initiatives at CB1, including the rezoning of Northern Tribeca and major quality of life issues such as noise, air quality, and traffic congestion.

Ms. Menin is the Founder and former President of Wall Street Rising (WSR), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing Lower Manhattan in the wake of the events of September 11th. Through WSR, she has spearheaded a number of programs including The Corridor of Light (which illuminates building fa�ades in the Financial District), WSR's Downtown Information Center, WSR's Retail Attraction Program, Art Downtown, Do It Downtown, and Wall Street Wednesdays. She has also advocated on the behalf of Downtown residents and business owners before Congress, the State Legislature and City Council.

In June 2002, Mayor Bloomberg appointed Ms. Menin as a Commissioner to the City's Districting Commission. In 2003, she served on LMDC's jury for the selection of the World Trade Center Site Memorial and now serves on the advisory panel for LMDC's Community Enhancement Fund Program. Ms. Menin is an Ex-Officio Trustee of the Battery Conservancy and a member of the Board of Directors of several organizations, including the Alliance for Downtown New York, the Governor's Island Alliance, the Women's Campaign Fund, and the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation. Ms. Menin also served on four government committees regarding the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan.

Prior to founding Wall Street Rising, Ms. Menin conceived of and opened Vine restaurant, a restaurant, market and catering operation located in the Financial District. Previously, Ms. Menin practiced law for eight years and was the Senior Regulatory Attorney for Colgate-Palmolive in New York where she specialized in regulatory and corporate issues. Prior to that, she was a corporate and regulatory attorney at the law firm Wiley, Rein & Fielding in Washington, D.C., where she specialized in regulatory and policy work. Ms. Menin received her law degree from Northwestern University and received her bachelor's degree magna cum laude in political science from Columbia University.
