Patrick D. Richards is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Chicago office. He is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department, where his practice focuses on patent, trademark and copyright prosecution, counseling, licensing and litigation.
Patrick manages patent and trademark portfolios that have both U.S. and foreign patents and trademarks. He has prosecuted patent applications in a variety of technologies including plastic bottles, injection-molding equipment, food handling and food packaging systems, computer programs, air ventilation equipment, sewer cleaning equipment, management and repair systems for railcars, construction equipment, playing cards and systems relating to use and management of transaction cards. He also has patent litigation experience, including cases involving electrical security systems, voicemail systems, various medical devices and coaxial cable connectors.
Patrick has made presentations relating to patent practice, including a presentation to the Illinois Paralegal Association in 2001. Also, he co-authored a presentation for the 2001 Biotech Law and Litigation Summit entitled "Legal Implications for Patent Genomics and Proteomics: A Closer Look at the Differences Between the United States and the United Kingdom" and co-authored an article in Mass High Tech, the Journal of New England Technology, "Make Protecting Your Inventions Globally a Priority" in 2003.
Patrick earned a bachelors of science in civil engineering, with honors. He is admitted to practice before the courts of Illinois and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and is registered to practice for the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
