Peter C. Brown is chairman of the board, chief executive officer and president of AMC Entertainment Inc. (AMC). He has served as chairman and chief executive officer since July 1999 and as president since January 1997. Brown is only the third chairman in the company's 85-year history. He began his career with AMC in 1990 and became senior vice president and chief financial officer in 1991. Brown served as co-chairman of the board from May 1998 through July 1999 and as executive vice president from August 1994 to January 1997.
Prior to joining AMC, Brown was associated with a New York City-based private equity firm. He began his business career with a regional commercial banking organization headquartered in Missouri.
Brown is currently active on several corporate boards, including: the board of directors of Midway Games, Inc., a developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software traded on the New York Stock Exchange; the board of National CineMedia, Inc., a cinema advertising company; co-chairman of the board and co-chief executive officer of MovieTickets.com, Inc., an Internet movie theatre ticketing company. Brown also serves on the board of directors of Embarq Corporation, which provides a suite of communications services to customers in its local service territories. Embarq was spun-off by Sprint Nextel Corporation in May 2006 and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
Brown has served the community through many civic activities and board memberships. He currently serves on the Rockhurst High School board of trustees, a position he also held 1998 through 2001. Brown has been a member of the board of advisors for the University of Kansas School of Business; the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City; the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce board of directors; the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) board of advisors; and the Kansas City Art Institute board of trustees.
Brown's philanthropic endeavors include both personal involvement and professional support of AMC Entertainment Inc. programs. These include: the Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City; the Mid America and Southern California chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society; DeLaSalle Education Center; Variety The Children's Charity; Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation; and the St. Lawrence Center at the University of Kansas.
Active in the entertainment industry, Brown is a member of the executive committee and vice chairman of the board of directors of the National Association of Theatre Owners. He is a member of the advisory board for the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation as well as a member of Variety International's Movie Industry Advisory Council. In 2003, Brown was honored to receive the 19th Annual Salah M. Hassanein Humanitarian Award, bestowed upon executives whose involvement, care and concern for community is as important as their dedication to the entertainment industry. Brown was also presented the Kansas City Business Journal's "Get on Board for Entrepreneurial Success" Outstanding Director Award in 2003 and is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). In 2006, Brown was named "ShoWester of the Year," an honor that is given to individuals who, throughout their career, demonstrated a dedication to the betterment of the exhibition industry and its causes.
Previously, Brown founded and served as chairman of the board of Entertainment Properties Trust, a New York Stock Exchange-traded real estate investment trust, from 1997 to 2003. Other past corporate board memberships include LabOne, Inc., a diagnostic testing laboratory, serving from 1999 to 2001; and Protection One, Inc., a security alarm monitoring company, serving from 1999 to 2001.
