Peter Siavelis is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Chicago office. Peter is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department and focuses his practice on domestic and international patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, unfair competition and other related causes.
Prior to joining McDermott, Peter practiced in a full-service intellectual property law firm. The primary areas of his practice include intellectual property litigation, patent and trademark prosecution, and technology acquisition and licensing, including due diligence activities.
Peter's litigation experience is primarily in pre-trial litigation, involving a wide variety of intellectual property matters, particularly patent infringement, trademark infringement, trade secret misappropriation and commercial breach of contract matters. Peter has actively participated in all aspects of the litigation process including taking and defending depositions, conducting fact and expert discovery, briefing and arguing substantive motions, and participating in trial preparation and proceedings. Peter has litigated in federal district courts and the International Trade Commission (ITC) for a variety of technologies, including computer network software and semiconductor chip packaging.
Peter's prosecution experience includes preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the mechanical and electrical arts. He has prosecuted patent applications related to: beverage containers, lighting fixtures, semi-conductor fabrication equipment, light emitting diodes (LEDs), computer server hardware and cabinets, infrared, ultrasonic and acoustic sensor assemblies, medical devices and packaging containers, food processing equipment, window hardware, plastic part molding, concrete conduit repair, commercial printing equipment, sports equipment including those having active monitoring systems, portable hot tubs and barbecue grills.
Peter's practice further includes IP asset management, counseling and opinion work for various technologies, including 2G (CDMA) and 3G (W-CDMA) wireless communication protocols. As part of the IP management, Peter performed due diligence investigations in connection with the acquisition of assets and businesses. Regarding counseling and opinion work, Peter has prepared and reviewed license agreements, technology transfer agreements, joint development agreements and confidentiality agreements.
In the past, Peter has worked for the Ingersoll-Rand Company as an application design engineer and designed and supported light to medium-grade compressed air systems as well as designed and supported compressed air systems for heavy industrial applications in both the United States and abroad. While an undergraduate, Peter worked as a petroleum engineer at Mobil Oil Corporation's Joliet Refinery.
Peter received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering.
Peter's professional affiliations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Chicago Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, American Bar Association and Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC).
Peter is admitted to practice in the state of Illinois and before the Supreme Court of Illinois, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and is registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
