Mr. Tomsett has over 25 years of experience in the mining industry 20 years of which he served with Placer Dome Inc. the last two of which as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the company until its takeover by Barrick Gold in January of this year. Mr. Tomsett started with the Placer Dome Group in 1986 in Sydney Australia in Project Development and was later promoted to Mine General Manager for the Kidston and Osborne Mines respectively. Four years later he became General Manager Investor Relations at the company's Canadian office in Vancouver until in April of 2000 he returned to his native Australia to become Vice President and then Executive Vice President Operations for Placer Dome Asia Pacific. Shortly thereafter he took on the added responsibility for Placer Dome Africa which included mines in South Africa and Tanzania. His appointment to President and Chief Executive Officer came in September 2004.
Mr. Tomsett has been a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors the Australian Institute of Mining and the Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum. More recently he was a member of the World Gold Council and the International Council for Mining and Metals.
Mr. Tomsett graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mining Engineering from the University of New South Wales later attaining a Master of Science (Distinction) in Mineral Production Management from the Imperial College in London. |
