Richard D. McCormick is the honorary chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce, the world business organization that promotes open international trade and a global market economy. Mr. McCormick completed a two-year term as chairman of the organization on Dec. 31, 2002. Earlier, he served as ICC vice chairman. With the title of honorary chairman, Mr. McCormick remained part of the ICC's three-person "chairmanship" until the end of 2004. He was named a vice chairman of the United States Council for International Business, the U.S. affiliate of the ICC, in February 2001. He had served as USCIB chairman since 1995.
Mr. McCormick is chairman emeritus of U S WEST Inc., having retired as chief executive officer in 1998 and chairman in 1999. He was elected president and chief operating officer of U S WEST in 1986, CEO in 1990 and chairman in 1992. Under Mr. McCormick's leadership, Denver-based U S WEST was the first regional Bell company to complete an alliance with a cable television company to build interactive networks nationwide, and the first to build a network for the new generation of wireless phones. He also moved U S WEST into a variety of international markets in 20 countries.
He began his telecommunications career in 1961 in Kansas City, Mo., as an engineer for AT&T. After eight years with AT&T, Mr. McCormick transferred to Northwestern Bell, where he held a variety of assignments before being named president of the Omaha-based company in 1982. A year after the 1984 break-up of the Bell System and the creation of U S WEST, he moved to Denver as executive vice president of the new regional Bell operating company.
A native of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Mr. McCormick received an electrical engineering degree from Iowa State University in 1961. He serves on the boards of Nortel Networks Corporation, Wells Fargo and Company, United Technologies Corp., and HealthTrio Inc. Mr. McCormick is a trustee of the Denver Art Museum. |
