Dr. Lutes received his BS degree and MD degree from the University of Illinois. Following an internship at Cook County Hospital, he served a tour of duty as a captain in the US Army serving one year in Viet Nam as a battalion surgeon for the First Air Cavalry Division. He then completed a residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and a fellowship in hematology at the Cardeza Foundation for Hematological Research in Philadelphia. In 1974 he founded the Waterbury Hematology Oncology Associates in central Connecticut. Dr. Lutes is highly regarded his for involvement in medical teaching and conducting numerous clinical trials in conjunction with the University of Connecticut, Yale University and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group. Dr. Lutes held appointments as Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale University College of Medicine and the University of Connecticut College of Medicine. Dr. Lutes joined Bayer Pharmaceutical Division in 1992 and as Director of Clinical Services. At Bayer he created a clinical trial program initiating 30 strategic non-registration trials to test new hypothesis for marketed biological products. He worked as Chief Medical Officer for the Biological Products Division and directed scientific studies, drug information and medical communications and worked on medical oncology drug launch programs. In 2000, Dr. Lutes was one of the first members of Access Oncology (currently Keryx Pharmaceuticals) working to create the award winning Web site CancerEducation.com and as president of OCOG, he developed a national oncology clinical trial group. |
