one of Cymer's co-founders has served as its chairman and chief executive officer since its inception in 1986 and served as president of the company as well from its inception until May 2000. He currently serves on the boards of directors of SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International) and SEMI North America. He is also a member of the council of advisors to the Irwin and Joan Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and serves on the board of the UC San Diego Foundation. Akins received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for San Diego County in 1997 and with fellow co-founder Rick Sandstrom received the outstanding alumnus award from UCSD and the prestigious SEMI Award for North America the highest honor conferred by SEMI in 1996 for contributions to the field of DUV lithography. He received a bachelor's degree in physics a bachelor's degree in literature and a doctorate in applied physics from the University of California San Diego.
