Robert W. Irish is a member of the Corporate Law Practice Group in the firm's Shanghai office. His practice is focused on business law, secured lending and commercial transactions, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, customs and international trade. From the Shanghai office, Rob will advise Godfrey & Kahn clients concerning their business strategies and operations in China and service their global needs. In addition, he will establish and maintain important contacts within the Chinese business, legal and governmental communities. Before joining the firm, Rob was a member of the International Trade and Regulatory Group at Alston & Bird, LLP in Washington, DC. He represented both foreign and domestic clients in matters involving trade regulation, customs, export controls, foreign direct investment and embargoes. Prior to that time, Rob was a member of the Securitization Group at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP in Chicago. He represented multi-national banks, finance companies, issuers, borrowers and underwriters. His practice included structuring domestic and cross-border commercial paper funded securitization conduits, asset securitization (assets classes included trade receivables, credit card receivables, mortgages, and aircraft leases), and the acquisition of financial assets. Rob has lived and worked in Asia for a number of years and speaks Mandarin Chinese. In addition to practicing law, Rob has taught at the undergraduate level both in Shanghai and the United States, and maintains an ongoing association with the East Asian Legal Studies Center at the University of Wisconsin Law School. Rob received his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School and his master's degree in finance from the University of Wisconsin School of Business. He received his bachelor's degree in international relations and economics from Tufts University in Massachusetts.
