Robert Essner, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer joined Wyeth (formerly American Home Products Corporation) in 1989 as Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, for Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories. In 1991, he was appointed to the position of Executive Vice President for Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories; and two years later, he became President of Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories responsible for the domestic pharmaceutical business. In 1997, Mr. Essner was named President of Wyeth-Ayerst Global Pharmaceuticals and assumed responsibility for the global pharmaceutical business. The same year, he was elected to the position of Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors, Wyeth. In 2000, he was elected President and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Essner was elected Chief Executive Officer in May 2001 and Chairman in January 2003.
Mr. Essner came to Wyeth from Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation where he was named Chief Operating Officer in 1988. During his 13-year tenure with Sandoz, Mr. Essner had extensive experience with both prescription and over-the-counter businesses.
A graduate of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, Mr. Essner received a master's degree from the University of Chicago.
Currently, Mr. Essner is Chairman of the Children's Health Fund Corporate Council as well as a member of the Business Roundtable and Business Council. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company. Mr. Essner is past Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America.
